Quarantining fish in the aquarium fish trade here in the UK is, in a nutshell ........ expensive hard work.
In essence, most stores may allow new stock to "rest" for a day or two, make sure that the livestock are feeding and put them up for general sale.
Having so many years experience, 42 and counting, we have learnt a thing or two about quarantining fish, fish health, disease prevention and disease treatment. Suffice to say that 2 days "resting" is simply not the right thing to do with a new fish import.
A few years ago we invested in a purpose built facility for quarantining our imported fish properly and as a result we have a strict policy to ensure that when the fish are finally offered for sale in our shop, they are free from disease, they have gained weight (many fish are starved prior to export from foreign countries to the UK, to prevent the degradation of the water quality in the bag during shipping) and are fighting fit.
As an offshoot of the quarantine facility we now grow on many species and also breed selected lines which gives our customers the confidence to buy our fish knowing that they are purchasing the very best there is.
